Alaska's Infrastructure Faces Distinct Geohazard Risk
Alaska combines two geohazard drivers found almost nowhere else in the country at this scale. The state sits atop the Pacific Ring of Fire, producing seismic activity and steep, actively uplifting mountain terrain that sheds rock and triggers landslides along corridors like the Seward and Richardson Highways. At the same time, permafrost underlying roughly 80 percent of the state is thawing as the climate warms, causing ground subsidence beneath highways and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System that has no real equivalent in the lower 48.
