Arkansas's Infrastructure Faces Distinct Geohazard Risk
The Ouachita Mountains and Arkansas River Valley in western Arkansas fold weathered shale into slopes that fail during heavy rainfall, while the Ozark Plateau's limestone karst in the north produces sinkholes similar to those found in neighboring Missouri and Tennessee. Eastern Arkansas presents a third distinct risk: the Mississippi Embayment overlies the New Madrid Seismic Zone, where loose alluvial soils are highly susceptible to liquefaction during a seismic event, a risk most of the state's infrastructure was not originally designed around.
